Mt Koya Autumn Leaves
During the autumn season, Mt. Koya showcases its peak beauty. The typically serene "sanctuary in the sky" undergoes a stunning transformation as its historic temples and ancient pathways are enveloped in a vibrant tapestry of red and gold foliage.
The ideal time to observe this breathtaking autumn landscape is generally from late October to mid-November. Join us for a truly memorable autumn retreat—wander through the mountain trails adorned in rich seasonal hues and enjoy the exquisite tastes of traditional vegetarian Shojin-ryori.
History of Mt Koya
Mt. Koya is the sacred heart of Shingon Buddhism, a significant sect brought to Japan in 805 by Kobo Daishi (also known as Kukai)—one of the country's most respected religious figures. Over the years, a tranquil, secluded temple town has thrived around the mountain's densely wooded summit, where Kobo Daishi first established his base. Today, this holy mountain is home to his revered mausoleum and marks both the spiritual beginning and conclusion of the renowned Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.
After years of traveling across the country in search of the ideal spiritual foundation for his teachings, Kobo Daishi commenced the construction of the original Garan temple complex in 826. Since its inception, over one hundred temples have emerged along the misty pathways of Mt. Koya. Among these, the two most significant locations are Kongobuji, the head temple of Shingon Buddhism, and Okunoin, the deeply mystical area surrounding Kobo Daishi’s mausoleum.
