Tour Description
Shodoshima, the second largest island in the Seto Inland Sea, is a favored destination for those wishing to discover the Inland Sea archipelago. Renowned for its unique culinary traditions, the island benefits from a relatively mild climate and proximity to essential shipping routes. Local delicacies feature soy sauce and long, thin somen noodles, with olives being a newer addition to the island's offerings.
The Kankakei Ropeway is recognized as one of Japan's three major scenic valleys and serves as a hallmark of Setonaikai National Park. This ropeway connects the base of Kankakei to its peak and uniquely provides views of the sky, sea, and valley simultaneously. Visitors can marvel at the vibrant autumn foliage in shades of red and yellow, accompanied by the expansive Seto Inland Sea visible beyond the gorge. The autumn leaves surrounding the unusual rock formations of Kankakei Gorge are especially breathtaking. Witness the extensive autumn colors alongside a valley that has formed over approximately 2 million years.
On Shodoshima Island, soy sauce production is concentrated in an area known as Soy Sauce Village, where Meiji-era (1868-1912) warehouses and factories line the path from Yasuda to Sakate Port. These historical buildings, still operational today, exude a nostalgic ambiance with their traditional charred wooden exteriors and aged plaster walls.
Road Station Shodoshima Olive Park is a multifaceted facility that allows visitors to engage with olives through all five senses. Highlights include the Olive Memorial Hall, which showcases the history of olives, and a Greek Windmill that evokes the Mediterranean spirit.
