1-Day Tour: Cycling the Shimanami Kaido and Ferrying the Seto Inland Sea

Tour Description

The Shimanami Kaido begins in Onomichi and links six islands to Imabari. This tour focuses on the first three islands—Mukaishima, Innoshima, and Ikuchijima (~26 km). The well-kept cycling path features gentle bridge inclines for a comfortable ride.

Since its opening in 1999, the contemporary bridges have offered picturesque views of the Seto Inland Sea. With mild winters and sunny weather, this area is ideal for outdoor pursuits. The islands are renowned for their citrus fruits and the historic Murakami Suigun—naval protectors who safely guided vessels through challenging tides instead of attacking them.

Mukaishima

A brief 5-minute ferry journey (~300m) from Onomichi Station will take you to Mukaishima. Boasting a 28km coastline, this tranquil island maintains a nostalgic, retro vibe. Ferries operate regularly every 12 minutes without a set schedule.

Innoshima

Once a bastion for the Murakami Suigun, this island later prospered through shipbuilding and salt production.

Oyama Shrine

Established in 773, it is the oldest shrine on Innoshima. Historically honored as the protector shrine of the Murakami Suigun naval clan, it has gained recent popularity as a shrine for bicycles and hearing.

Ikuchijima Island

Renowned for its warm climate and premium lemons, Ikuchijima also serves as an open-air museum. Distinctive art sculptures are scattered throughout the island for visitors to explore.

Kosanji Temple

Situated on Ikuchijima Island, this striking temple showcases grand, unique white architecture alongside a vibrant garden filled with stunning seasonal flowers.

Itinerary

• Meet with your guide at Onomichi Station
• Rent bicycles (30minutes / fee is included) and take a ferry from Onomichi to Mukaishima (5 minutes / fee is included)
• Cycling Innoshima (75 minutes)
• Cycling and explore Innoshima (3 hours) You can drop in at Oyama Shrine.
• Have your lunch by your own in Innoshima.
• Ikuchijima Island (3 hours)
• Kosanji Temple (admission fee is included)
• Take a ferry with your bike from Setoda Port (Ikuchijima Island) to Onomichi (45 minutes / fee is included)

1. Smoking is strictly prohibited on the ferry.

1. If you accidentally leave any belongings on the ferry, please be aware that they will be disposed of.
