Myoban Yunosato: Private Hot Spring Experience
Welcome to a serene hot spring haven nestled in the mountains that transports you back in time. Myoban Yunosato is renowned for its distinctive "Yunohana-goya," which are traditional, straw-roofed huts that have been utilized since the Edo period (more than 300 years ago) for collecting rare natural hot spring mineral powders.
Here, you will bypass the public baths and enter your own 100% private outdoor rental cabin (Kazokuyu). For a duration of 60 minutes, you can immerse yourself in the milky-white, sulfur-rich healing waters in total seclusion. The mineral properties are celebrated for enhancing skin beauty and alleviating fatigue.
Myoban Jigoku: Walking Among Steaming Earth
Experience the raw, striking power of nature at Myoban Jigoku (Myoban Hell). In contrast to the more commercial "Hells" found in central Beppu, this hidden treasure provides a rustic and genuine insight into Beppu's geothermal wonders.
As you stroll along the picturesque walking paths, you will be enveloped by rising clouds of volcanic steam, bubbling mud, and the unmistakable scent of sulfur. Your guide will share intriguing details about the science behind how the local landscape captures minerals, and you will enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the historic village alongside the Myoban toll bridge, set against a backdrop of steaming terrain.
Okamoto-ya: Savoring Legendary Geothermal Delicacies
A visit to Myoban would not be complete without stopping by Okamoto-ya, a cherished local establishment in operation since 1955. This quaint, rustic shop is renowned worldwide for innovating "Jigoku-mushi" (Hell-steaming), a traditional cooking technique that employs pure volcanic steam directly from the earth.
Your tour includes their famous Jigoku Purin (Geothermal Custard Pudding), a delectable dessert with a melt-in-your-mouth texture and a perfectly bittersweet caramel sauce, along with a savory, naturally flavored hard-boiled onsen egg. This stop also serves as your lunch break. You may opt to purchase additional local specialties at your own cost, such as their well-loved hot spring-steamed Udon noodles or tasty rice balls, all while taking in breathtaking views of the valley.
