The opportunity to experience tea ceremony in English with a tea practitioner with her experiences abroad

Not only is the tea ceremony itself a highlight, but the setting of the room is also authentic. This is a unique find in Tokyo.

The tearoom has been constructed using traditional methods, featuring wooden materials specifically chosen for this space. You will have the chance to explore this authenticity while participating in the tea ceremony within a tranquil environment.

The activity includes:

  • The presentation of the history of tea ceremony
  • A demonstration of the tea-making procedure known as "temae"
  • Instruction on how to drink matcha green tea (both thin tea and thick tea) and a close examination of the tea ceremony utensils.※Thick tea "koicha" is served usually only at a formal tea ceremony, therefore you will have a precious experience.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to prepare some matcha.
  • Souvenirs included - Traditional Japanese items made of washi "和紙".

Tea practitioner Ms. Haruki, hailing from Oita, Japan, has been practicing the tea ceremony since her high school years. She has studied the international tea ceremony in Tokyo and has showcased the tea-making process in the US and New Zealand. As a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter, she actively promotes Japanese culture, particularly through the tea ceremony.

Thick tea "koicha" - you can experience this authenticity only here in Kugayama

During the tea ceremony, you can expect to enjoy two types of tea: thick tea “koicha” and thin tea “usucha”. While koicha is typically served in more formal settings, it embodies a deep sense of care, appreciation, and respect among participants. In contrast, usucha is enjoyed in a more casual, friendly atmosphere, allowing for a relaxed experience. Thus, it is uncommon to find an opportunity to taste koicha, providing insight into the differences between the two types of tea—not just in flavor, but also in the enjoyment of each.

Chaki serves as a container for powdered green tea, with different types designated for thick and thin tea. For thick tea "koicha", a ceramic container known as "chaire" is utilized, which is stored in a bag referred to as "oshifuku". The oshifuku is crafted from beautiful traditional fabrics. For thin tea "usucha", lacquered ware is used, which comes in various shapes, with the most common being called "natsume".

The tea room

You can observe:

  • An exceptional architectural design of the ceiling featuring bamboo woven in various techniques.

  • A furnace that is utilized differently depending on the season.
