Chofu: The Living History of the Samurai
Our adventure commences in Chofu, a serene and beautifully preserved castle town. This location served as the residence for high-ranking samurai tasked with safeguarding the western gates of Honshu.
The Samurai Point
You will stroll along authentic earthen walls (Tsuchibe) that have withstood the test of time, guiding you to the Chofu Mori Mansion. This was the family home of the Mori clan, a significant samurai lineage integral to Japan's transition into modernity.
The Matcha Experience
Inside this historic villa, you will engage in a moment of tranquility. Relax on tatami mats while enjoying premium Matcha green tea accompanied by a seasonal Japanese sweet, all while admiring a meticulously maintained landscape garden.
Crossing the Kanmon Strait: A Legendary Sea Journey
After immersing yourself in the samurai heritage on land, we venture onto the water for an exhilarating experience.
The Cruise Point
We will board the Kanmon Ferry for a swift 5-minute journey across the strait. This experience is more than just transportation; it takes you over the very waters where the renowned Battle of Dan-no-ura occurred. You will sense the strength of the rushing ocean currents and gaze up at the towering Kanmon Bridge—a view uniquely accessible from the boat's deck.
The Dawn of the Meiji Era: Where Old Meets New
Upon reaching Mojiko, you will disembark and step into the architectural landscape of the Meiji Era (1868–1912).
The Meiji History Point
This tour is closely linked to the "Dawn of Modern Japan." While Chofu signifies the conclusion of the Samurai era, Mojiko embodies the inception of the contemporary nation. You will encounter impressive red-brick structures and the historic Mojiko Station, which stand as testaments to the swift westernization and industrial advancements that characterized the Meiji Restoration.
Mekari Shrine
Additionally, we will visit this ancient shrine, positioned at the strait's edge. It has overseen these waters for 1,800 years, providing a spiritual connection between Japan’s mythical past and its modern-day future.
