Owara Kaze no Bon Festival
Taking place every year from September 1st to 3rd, the Owara Kaze no Bon Festival signifies the onset of autumn in Yatsuo, a district within Toyama City. Men and women don woven hats that are pulled low over their faces as they elegantly march through the streets, accompanied by the somber tunes of kokyū, shamisen, and traditional Etchū Owara folk songs. This dance tradition has been preserved for over 300 years, dating back to the Edo period. Eleven local neighborhoods, collectively referred to as “Kyūchō” (Old Town), each showcase their own street processions. The graceful choreography throughout this historic town, characterized by its slopes, evokes a profound sense of lyricism and sophistication. During the Owara Kaze no Bon Festival, groups from 11 neighborhoods perform evening street dances starting at around 5:00 PM, each featuring distinct dance styles, yukata designs, and song lyrics.
