Tour Description

Step aboard a classic flat-bottomed vessel for a picturesque journey along the Satetsu River, flanked by steep cliffs on both sides. The boatmen skillfully navigate these handcrafted cedar boats up the serene river using a long pole. While they propel the boats, the boatmen share stories in their native dialect and sing traditional folk songs that resonate off the cliffs.

River excursions through the gorge are led by boatmen who use bamboo poles to guide their boats, providing a truly unique experience in all of Japan. The boatmen’s age-old melodies blend harmoniously with the gentle sounds of flowing streams, adding a special allure to the tour.

Before heading back down the river, guests have the opportunity to disembark at the turning point for a stroll along the gorge. This walk includes a notable rock known as the Lion’s Nose, from which the name Geibikei is derived, as well as a well-known cavity in the cliff on the opposite side of the gorge. Visitors often participate in the tradition of tossing “lucky stones” into the cavity to fulfill their wishes!

• There are 10 undama: destiny, longevity, fortune, connections, wishes, romance, love, bonds, income, and assets. You can purchase five for 100 yen.
