Nakasendo

The Nakasendo Trail serves as a historical pathway linking Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto, traditionally traversed by Samurai. This trail preserves the essence of ancient times and offers hikers a chance to embark on a samurai-like adventure, making it a favored destination for international visitors!

Mitake-juku

The town's landscape continues to showcase significant remnants of its history, including the remains of the main inn and the traditional bamboo merchant houses.

  • Mimi (ear) - Jinja shrine
This unusual shrine is situated on a rocky mountain along the Nakasendo route and is believed to possess healing powers for ear ailments.
  • Ushi-no-hanakake (ox's nose is scraped off) slope
This slope, hewn from the bedrock, is so steep that it is said the noses of oxen and horses traveling the Nakasendo would get scraped.
  • Uto Slope's stone pavement
The term "Uto" translates to "sing a song". This name originated from a weary traveler who, while ascending from Ushi-no-hanakake slope to this incline, sang to alleviate his fatigue.

Hosokute-juku

  • Bato kannon (horse-headed kannon)'s stone cave in Hosokute
Commonly referred to as the "99,000-days kannon," visiting on kannon day is said to bestow 99,000 blessings.
  • Benten Pond
Benten, the goddess of various blessings like fortune, art, and education, has a stone cave dedicated to her on a small island. The Benten statue here is a standing figure with eight arms!
  • Biwa Pass's stone pavement
Biwa-toge, at 557.1m above sea level, stands as the highest point in the Mino Province of the Nakasendo, located between Hosokute and Okute post towns. It features the longest original stone-paved path from the Edo period, guiding you through a serene forest on a journey back in time.

Okute-juku

  • Marumori (former Morioka Noriyuki's family residence)
Constructed towards the end of the Edo period, this residence maintains its traditional Edo machiya style (Edo townhouse), reflecting the ambiance of a prosperous inn and merchant house from that era.
