Private BONSAI Tour at Kitadani Yoseien
Kitatani Yoseien, situated to the northeast of Kinashi Station, features a collection of 400 to 500 black pine bonsai trees, each believed to be over a century old, which were gathered from the mountains and potted on islands in the Seto Inland Sea around 60 years ago.

Yamadori and Bonsai Culture
"Yamadori" is the term used to describe the technique of transplanting naturally occurring trees from mountains and fields into pots, transforming them into unique bonsai trees that differ from those typically cultivated in fields. Historically, black pines were raised on the islands of the Seto Inland Sea for use in baths, but the island pines, shaped by the strong coastal winds, exhibit naturally occurring curves, resulting in surprising tree forms.
The second generation was responsible for gathering these trees from the islands, while the third generation has diligently continued to shape them over the years. As the fourth-generation owner, Ryuichi Kitatani expresses, "I can't let these valuable trees be ruined in my generation. It's my mission to properly nurture the talents of these excellent bonsai." Inspired by the dedication of the third generation, he naturally sought to carry on the family legacy.
Ryuichi runs "The Fourth Generation Bonsai Never Withers School" on YouTube, where he instructs newcomers on how to cultivate bonsai. He also shares insights on Facebook about enjoying bonsai, receiving particularly enthusiastic feedback from international bonsai lovers. The influx of foreign visitors to his garden is on the rise, and despite challenges with export restrictions, he envisions significant opportunities for bonsai in global markets.
