Buddha of Enlightenment

This Buddha possesses the ability to transform the excesses of the heart, such as lust and desire, into enlightenment, guiding followers towards Bodhi, the realm of enlightenment. Embracing this path offers four key advantages: the exorcism of malevolent spirits, protection from calamities, enhanced prospects for marriage, and improved health.

Temple History

The temple is believed to be situated in Dogahara, Jurakuji Valley, approximately 3 km north of its present location. It is said that during a visit to this region, Kobo Daishi experienced the presence of Amida Nyorai and subsequently carved a statue of Nyorai. He is also credited with naming the temple “Kōmeizan Jurakuji,” in recognition of the ten hardships and the illuminating pleasures that arise amidst life's unavoidable challenges, including old age, illness, and death.

Historical Significance

For a period following its establishment, the temple featured an expansive compound with seven structures in the northern Awa region. However, in 1528, all the pagodas were lost to fire during the assaults led by Chosokabe Motochika. Thankfully, it is reported that the honzon of that era survived the calamity and was relocated to its current site in 1635, where it was later reconstructed.
