Meiji Shrine Tour

Meiji Shrine provides a breathtaking natural retreat right in the city, enveloped by around 100,000 trees. As you stroll along the shaded pathway, accompanied by the sounds of birds, you will come across Japan’s most massive wooden torii gate. Made from a 1,500-year-old Taiwanese cypress, this impressive 12-meter structure creates a memorable impression with its monumental stature. When you walk through the torii, it is customary to stay on the edges of the path to respect the sacred central route, known as seichu, which is reserved for deities. This tour is a small group experience with a maximum of 10 participants.

At the main shrine, you will have the opportunity to engage with Shinto, the ancient religion of Japan. Shinto is deeply rooted in reverence for nature and the pursuit of harmony with the divine, offering spiritual guidance to the people of Japan over the centuries. After paying your respects, you may wish to acquire omamori (protective charms) or a distinctive omikuji referred to as Omigokoro, which includes poems authored by Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. These poems are accompanied by English translations, making them accessible and meaningful for visitors from abroad.

Following your visit to the shrine, relax at Forest Terrace Meiji Jingu. At Café ‘Mori no Terrace,’ you can savor Japanese tea and light snacks while enjoying the picturesque surroundings. The gift shop features unique souvenirs, including eco-blocks crafted from aromatic Japanese camphor and miniature barrels of sacred sake, ideal for preserving the memories of your experience.

Please note: This tour is available in English only; support in Japanese is not provided.
