Tsurugajo Castle
Dating back to a manor constructed in 1384, the famous warlord Gamo Ujisato established Eastern Japan's first genuine castle tower, which he named "Tsurugajo." This castle gained fame as an "impregnable fortress" after withstanding a month-long intense siege by imperial troops during the Boshin War in 1868. Although it was dismantled during the Meiji period, it has been meticulously reconstructed. Today, Tsurugajo is the sole castle in Japan featuring the historic "red tiles," representing the lasting samurai spirit of Aizu.
